Book Discussion: Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho
The Racial Justice Committee of UUCSW will sponsor a book discussion as a part of their ongoing search for understanding of racism here and now. Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho will be discussed with Elijah Manning moderating.
In 2020, in response to the George Floyd murder, many folks in all races wanted to work toward a greater understanding of each other. The book flowed out of a series of YouTube conversations that Mr. Acho held to help white people to understand black people, who they are, and where they are coming from. Some of the issues include: “why is it important to recognize blackness rather than be ‘color blind’?” “why are black people so angry?” “why do black people destroy their own neighborhoods in riots?”
Elijah Manning, the moderator, was born and raised and lives on the Connecticut shore where he works with communities to help have productive conversations around anti-racism awareness. He has worked in the schools, libraries, and other organizations who want to expand their understanding. He can be reached through his website inclusiveeducationllc.com The discussion will be via Zoom at 1 pm on Sunday, March 20.
Registration will be required. Start your reading now and stay tuned for registration details.
