Five Smooth Stones of Liberal Religion – Part 2

Led by Rev. Misty-Dawn Shelly

This October Rev. Misty-Dawn, will offer a two part sermon Five Smooth Stones of Liberal Religion. This two part sermon will explore James Luther Adams’ Five Smooth Stones of Liberal Religion. Who is James Luther Adams? James Luther Adams was a Unitarian parish minister, social activist, journal editor, distinguished scholar, translator and editor of major German theologians, prolific author, and divinity school professor for more than forty years. Adams was the most influential theologian among American Unitarian Universalists of the 20th century.

What are the Five Smooth Stones? On October 11th, we will explore the first three stones: (1) the concept of our living tradition and the importance of revelation being continuous; (2) we freely choose to enter into relationship and community with one another; and (3) we hold a moral obligation to work toward a more just and loving community. On October 18, we will continue with the final two stones: (4) good things happen as a result of human effort and (5) meaningful change comes from reason and optimism.
